where the wild things are

Let me preface this review by stating that Where the Wild Things Are isn’t appropriate for some children. If your child is particularly sensitive, then perhaps he or she isn’t ready for it. I took my nieces (ages 12, 7, 5) to see it and my cousin took her children (9, 6, 4), and they [...]

um, new moon? yeah. holy crap.

So I was getting a bit ambivalent about New Moon. I’m tired of hearing about Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and their torrid, star-crossed affair. You know, the one they’ve both flatly denied. Repeatedly. (And she’s been dating the same guy for, like, six or seven years.)
But no. The tabloids and the rabid Twifreaks refuse [...]

up, up & away…

So Up was the last of the big blockbusters this summer that I had to see. I thought I’d waited too long, but as it turns out, my second-favorite theater is one that tends to hang onto movies long after they’ve left all the others, and it was still showing it. Yay!
I kept the twins [...]

anne with an ‘e’

My friend, Cheryl, has somehow managed to grow up without ever seeing Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, and, being the good friend that I am, I set out to rectify that tragedy immediately.
I hadn’t seen the movies in a couple years and watching them all over again was so incredible. I’d forgotten [...]

so gi joe didn’t suck

Believe me, nobody’s more surprised than me.
After I saw the first full-length trailer a few months ago and caught a glimpse of the accelerator suits…yeah, I kind of lost all interest in seeing it, even though I was a huge fan of the cartoon growing up. My brother and cousins and I had all the [...]

i can’t go on, i’ll go on

Saturday mornings are a great time to see movies at my favorite theater because all matinees before noon are $5, and they tend to be really uncrowded.
I went to the 11 a.m. showing of Bandslam. As I posted a few days ago, it’s drawing good reviews and I was already pretty sure I’d like it [...]

texas high school football big

“Like a less oppresively hip Juno, Bandslam captures the way young people too smart and pop culture-savvy for their own good let the music and movies they love define them during adolescence’s crucible of humiliation and self-doubt.” — from Rotten Tomatoes
It’s being hailed as the “sleeper hit” of the summer.
I’m talking about Bandslam.
It’s pulling decent-to-good [...]

on upcoming movies

Edited, ’cause I got Avatar mixed up with The Last Airbender. Thanks, Candace!

I did a pretty good job at keeping up with movies this summer. I saw all of the big blockbusters except for Up (which I still plan on seeing, except it’ll probably have to be on DVD) and I also saw My Sister’s [...]

half-blood prince: best one yet

Caution: The following review contains pretty extensive spoilers from the movie. Proceed at your own risk.

I had planned on coming home from the 12:30 a.m. showing of Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince and going straight to bed, seeing as how I have to be at work in three-and-a-half hours. But to be honest, I’m [...]

i miss the classics

I love classic movies. I can’t exactly remember the first one that I saw; it might’ve been Casablanca. Or Roman Holiday. But whatever it was, I quickly learned to love stars like Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Maureen O’Hara…but my favorites were Jimmy Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly.
Come to [...]
