i love movies that hijack literature

I hung out with my friend yesterday afternoon, which turned into me getting home at, like, 11:30 at night. We went and saw the twilight showing of Hairspray (between 4-6 p.m., tickets are $4.25, woohoo) and then went to dinner at my uncle’s restaurant, Rio Mambo. We got chicken fajitas and followed those up with fresh sopapillas. YUM.

Anyway, somehow we got on the topic of movies (shocker) and when she found out I hadn’t seen She’s the Man yet, she’s like, “I’ve got it; let’s go watch it.” So we did.

I’m not sure how I missed this one, except for the fact I thought it was going to be way cheesy. I should’ve known better — I love everything Amanda Bynes is in. The girl has excellent comedic timing.

She’s the Man is (loosely) based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in much the same way that 10 Things I Hate About You (which is in my top five movies of all time) is (loosely) based on The Taming of the Shrew and Clueless is (loosely) based on Jane Austen’s Emma. It is so funny while still managing to be heart-warming. And hello, Channing Tatum is hot. I suppose I’ll now have to rent that dance movie he was in.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and will most definitely be copying it when I get it from Netflix next week. She lent me Music and Lyrics, which I somehow missed as well, and I loved the first hour. I had to turn it off tonight because my meds are kicking in and I’m sleepy, even though it’s only 9:06 p.m.

Oh yeah — I got to spend the afternoon in the doctor’s office, a wonderfully mind-numbing thrilling experience that resulted in me receiving two cortisone shots in my shoulder and arm (I’ve got some sort of inflammation of my rotator cuff). I don’t know about you, but I regularly look for opportunities to spend five hours in a doctor’s office. It’s great fun.

Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep more than 30 minutes tonight without waking up shrieking in pain, though, so maybe getting needles jabbed in me will be worth it.
