amazing grace

There was a movie out a couple months ago called Amazing Grace. I’m not sure anyone saw it; it slipped under my radar and I’m pretty sure it saw limited release here in San Antonio.

Still, I have heard absolutely amazing things about it. A friend of mine (whose taste in movies I generally share) raved about it but by the time she told me about it, it had already left the theaters.

Anyway, it’s a true story about the campaign to end slave trading in 18th century Britain by famed abolitionist William Wilberforce. Ioan Gruffudd (pronounced “Yo-an Griffith;” plays Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four movies) plays Wilberforce and I hear he is outstanding.

His efforts prompted John Newton (played by Albert Finney) to write what is probably the most well-known song in the world, the hymn ”Amazing Grace.”

Chris Tomlin (on whom I have recently developed a GINORMOUS crush) tinkered with the original hymn and added his flare and a bridge, and his version, “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)” was used to promote the movie.
