To avoid sounding like a broken record, especially after “There’s Got to be a Morning After Pill,” I’m going to simply compare Piz and Logan.
Here we go.
Stosh “Piz” Piznarski
He’s cute, in a slightly geeky/preppy kind of way.
He’s smart, as his radio talk show indicates — he’s up on politics and current events as well as more pop culture-y kinds of things.
He’s funny, witty, sarcastic, and charming.
He’s good friends with Veronica’s friends, Parker, Wallace, and Mac. This is important, because Logan only seems to put up with them when he has to, and Wallace most definitely does not trust Logan. He never has.
Granted, we don’t know much about his home life, but given his comments in “Welcome Wagon,” he comes from a nuclear, well-adjusted family with traditional values. (In other words, he doesn’t seem to have a penchant for bum fights, whoring in Mexico, drinking himself into a stupor, GHB, or having illicit sex with random people.)
He cares about Veronica and shows it through the little things — like actually sitting down and having conversations with her.
And then there’s…
Logan “Cry Me a River” Echolls
He’s been abused all his life. His mother abandoned him by retreating into a world controlled by alcohol and prescription drugs, and then left him to the whims of his cruel father by killing herself.
His father had sex with Lilly, then killed her. Then he tried to kill Veronica, Keith, and that other random guy. Then he tried to frame Duncan Kane for Lilly’s murder.
Logan acts out in a myriad of ways, including but not limited to: arranging illegal bum fights wherein he exploits homeless people for money; getting drunk on a regular basis; partying in Tijuana wherein he hooks up with random girls, professional and not-so-professional, scores GHB, and hey, sets hotels on fire; is partially responsible for Veronica getting roofied and subsequently raped; participates in illegal gambling institutions organized by his good friend, Mercer the Rapist; and finally, hooks up with the one person he knows Veronica can’t stand. (The fact that he didn’t seem to do so in a vindictive manner matters not in the least. Like Veronica said — to do something so intimate with another of the people responsible for Veronica getting raped, plus defacing her car as cruelly as she did, is pretty damn unforgivable.)
He is patently dishonest with Veronica and only seems to come clean when he has absolutely no choice — or he gets caught in the act, and then acts like a spoiled brat when Veronica is distrustful of him.
Yeah, Logan’s a real prize there. And I am overjoyed to hear that Veronica and Piz will indeed be pursuing something when VM returns for its last five-episode arc after the Dean O’Dell mystery concludes and it goes on a brief hiatus for that ridiculous Pussycat Dolls reality show. (And the CW wonders why its ratings are in the toilet.)
