lost sucks

Ha.  Just kidding.  It so doesn’t.  In fact, I’m more into it now than I was in the previous two seasons. Saying it sucks was my tongue-in-cheek attempt to be one of those annoying people who like to trash shows they don’t like anymore because the writers don’t cater to their every whim.  My thought?  Why are they still watching then?  Surely it has to take a ton of time and energy to constantly bitch about shows they claim to hate.  (Don’t get me started on the House, Veronica Mars, and Gilmore Girls bashers.)

Anyway, last night’s episode, “The Cost of Living,” nearly killed me.  But not because Eko died.  Yes, I was sad, and yes I shed a few tears, but that’s not what I mean.  See, stupid me, who normally swears off spoilers, inaccurately put two and two together about midway through when Juliet was being all sympathetic to Jack.

You see, Kristin had said someone was going to die.  And it wasn’t an Other, and it wasn’t a female.  And then in the most recent Entertainment Weekly, there’s a great interview with Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, and the writer says something about watching her “expertly” wield a Sig Sauer and pump two shots into “someone shocking.”

So.  I put those two spoilers together and was so convinced that she was going to kill Jack last night, I was freaking out.  But no — apparently that’s still to come.

New resolve, though, concerning me and spoilers — even Kristin’s, which I normally don’t consider very spoiler-ish: never again.  Plus I think I’m going to swear off previews, because the preview for next week’s has already got me in a bad mood.  Thank God for TiVo because if I have to watch Sawyer and Kate have sex, I might throw up a little in my mouth.

Also?  While I continue loving Juliet and Elizabeth Mitchell more and more every week, it is SO OBVIOUS that she is part of Ben’s master plan.  I don’t trust a single word that comes out of her mouth.  She’s playing Jack, playing on his inherent need to fix things, to solve problems, to be the hero.  He hates Ben, but he will perform the surgery because that’s the fixer in him.  Her stunt with the cue cards last night, while awesome, is a ploy to get Jack to trust her even more.  Poor, dumb, clueless Jack.  That doesn’t stop me from wanting them to hook up, however.  Way less puke-worthy than Sawyer and Kate.

Thoughts on Paulo and Niki: okay, so it’s a little odd how they’re just in the midst of everything all of a sudden.  Yes.  But exactly how are Damon & Co. supposed to introduce new characters?  There are no more sections of the plane to magically have survivors from, and they’re not Others.  So…what other suggestions are there?   Have them walk out of the ocean one sunny day after having taken a wrong turn on their morning swim?  With the rate that these people are dying, we need new characters.  Remember — Jack, Kate, Sayid, and the rest of the series regulars weren’t the only survivors from the plane.

In conclusion: Lost is fan-freaking-tastic.  The people who are complaining about it (constantly) are totally missing the big picture.  What’s unique and sets the show apart is its story-telling ability.  Do I want to know what Smoky is?  Sure.  But as long as the character backstories and development and constant themes of redemption and of finding one’s self and correcting past mistakes continue, I don’t care if I ever find out why there are polar bears running loose on a tropical island.
